The Miracle Morning (by Hal Elrod) Book Review: Opened My Mind

The most ‘ah-ha’ moment for me from this book was the idea that how you spend your days is how you spend your life. Whoa!

I came across this book while in an Amazon selling mastermind group, and thought maybe it could help me get more accomplished each day.

Where I Was

My schedule of getting ready for work, getting the kids ready for school, taking kids to school, commuting to work, working all day, commuting from work, picking up the kids after school, making dinner, cleaning up, playtime, bath time, bedtime… was wearing on me.

Also, I was angry for not having the energy to do what I wanted to do in the evenings before bed.

Not only did these habits I started have more effect on me than I thought, but I was READY to go to bed so I can wake up and do my own personal ‘Christmas morning.’

My new favorite mornings include:

  • Meditation with the Headspace app.

  • Reading a book I’m into.

  • Journaling about what I am grateful for.

  • Drawing a sweet 3”x5” note by hand for my daughter’s lunch and/or for my husband.

  • Visualizing by browsing a secret Pinterest vision board I made for myself.

  • Exercising with the 7-Minute Workout app.

All of these are timed out in 7-10 minute increments so that they are completed in an hour.

Lightbulb Notes

Your level of success will rarely exceed your level of personal development because success is something you attract by the person you become.

Our life situation is the set of external circumstances, events, people, and places that surround us. It’s not who we are. We are more than our life situation.

Highly Recommend

If you want to get into a meditation habit, I recommend reading this.

If you are too tired at the end of the day to do your ME TIME, I recommend reading this.

If you work full time and have kids to care for, I recommend reading this book to get the time back for yourself… so that you can fully show up and be present for the first two on the list. (Mask yourself before anyone around you.)

If you want simple tips and tricks not only to wake yourself up but to create a Miracle Morning that feels good to you, this book provides tools for both.

Positive Results

I read this book for myself and to work on myself, but other positive results have been:

  • My accountability group said they have noticed that I am calmer and more focused on what I’m doing for my projects.

  • My daughter gets sweet lunchbox art to help her remember I’m thinking of her during the day.

  • My body gets a little exercise each day so that I am not neglecting it as I was before. I’ve done the hardcore workouts to where I get a headache from pushing too hard. I’ve done the ‘working-out-to-escape-my-life’ sessions. It’s just not for me at this time. I want to be active and present with my kids and my husband.

If you are into self-improvement, life-long learning, and actionable implementation steps then get this book. Change those habits!

“The only exercise most people get is jumping to conclusions, running down their friends, sidestepping responsibility, and pushing their luck.”

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body and prayer is to the soul. We become the books we read.”
Matthew Kelly

“The purpose of a goal isn’t to hit the goal. The real purpose is to develop yourself into the type of person you want to be who can achieve your goals, regardless of whether you hit that particular one or not. It is who you become by giving it everything you have until the last moment -- regardless of your results -- that benefits you the most.”
